Climbing Rope And Safety Webbing Weave Types
Tubular webbing
Tubular webbing is constructed as a hollow tube of woven material. It’s typically lighter than flat webbing of equivalent width and offers more flexibility, making it easier to handle, tie, and manipulate. This type generally has better knot-holding ability and is usually more comfortable against the skin. Tubular webbing commonly comes in widths ranging from 9/16″ to 1″ (14mm to 25mm) and is popular for most general climbing applications.

Flat webbing
Flat webbing, on the other hand, is a solid, flat strip of material with no hollow center. It’s generally stronger than tubular webbing of the same width and offers more resistance to abrasion and wear. However, it tends to be stiffer and less pliable than tubular webbing, which can make it more challenging to tie knots with. Flat webbing is often used for heavy-duty applications and commonly comes in widths from 1″ to 2″ (25mm to 50mm).

Materials of Climbing Rope And Safety Webbing
Nylon
Nylon is selected for dynamic ropes because it has high stretch resistance (ability to rebound to normal size after being elongated) and shock resistance (ability to maintain strength despite withstanding high levels of sudden stress). When used in the core of static ropes, nylon provides a softer hand and energy absorption.
Polyester
Polyester is typically used in static ropes with minimal elongation under load. Polyester is more abrasion resistant than nylon, has very high UV resistance, is water-resistant, and low stretch. Some static lines have a Polyester sheath for abrasion resistance and weather protection and a Nylon core for handling, while other static lines built for use in high abrasion, wet conditions may be 100% Polyester.
Aramid
Aramid is a premium low stretch high strength fibre that provides extremely high breaking strength, excellent heat resistance, and high cut resistance for low weight. It is often used in rap lines. Aramid is water-resistant so useful in wet conditions. It is often combined with polyester or other fibres to compensate for its lower UV resistance.
HMPE
HMPE, or high modulus polyethylene, provides the highest strength for the lowest weight. It is sometimes used in the core of static ropes to keep the rope small and lightweight while still strong. HMPE has a low melting temperature, but high resistance to repeated bending.
● Nylon on nylon: This contact burns rope and webbing. You should especially avoid running two ropes through the same top-rope carabiners, and never run a top rope directly through slings.
● Step on the rope: This works dirt into the rope, which can damage it.
● Crampons and ice axes: Avoid direct hits with crampon spikes and ice axe picks.
● Poor rappelling and belaying: Fast or jerky rappelling, lowering and belaying can cause burning of the rope's sheath, as well as loss of control.


Keep it cool and dry
Store your rope in a cool, dry area. If you don't use a rope bag, coil your rope and hang it from a sling girth-hitched around the whole rope or hook the whole rope over a dowel.
Avoid the sun
Never leave your rope out in the sun for exposed periods of time. Sunshine from day-to-day climbing is not likely to damage your rope, but too much sun, such as leaving the rope out for days on end, can considerably weaken it. If your rope is becoming faded from the sun, consider replacing it.
Avoid heat
Don't store your rope in extreme heat, such as in a vehicle on a summer day, as that can damage the fibers.
Be careful around chemicals
Strong acids, such as battery acid, are extremely hazardous to your rope, so avoid them at all times. Be cautious when storing your rope in the trunk of a vehicle or in a garage or basement.
